The History of the Dinosaur Game: From Error Page to Icon

The most played video game of the modern era has no title screen, no soundtrack to speak of, and hides behind a network error. This is the history of the dinosaur game — how a loading-failure joke became a daily habit for hundreds of millions. (You can play our tribute to the original on the homepage any time, connection or not.)

2014: A Joke About Prehistory

The runner shipped quietly in September 2014 inside the Chrome browser. The design brief was humour: no connection means you're in the "prehistoric age", so you get a prehistoric companion. Designer Sebastien Gabriel's team considered making the dino roar or kick, but cut every flourish to keep it stark and "prehistoric" — pixel art, one button, grayscale desert.

"Project Bolan"

Internally the game carried the codename Project Bolan — a tribute to Marc Bolan, frontman of the band T. Rex. The pun stack is pure engineering humour: a T-Rex game named after T. Rex's singer, built for moments when technology fails.

The Early Problem: Old Phones

The first release struggled on older Android devices, and a rewrite finished in December 2014 brought the dino to virtually every platform Chrome supported — a fitting irony for a game aimed at users with patchy connectivity and budget hardware.

Growth Nobody Planned

  • 270 million plays per month across desktop and mobile became the commonly cited figure.
  • Most players came from markets where data is costly or unstable — India, Brazil, Indonesia, Mexico.
  • Easter-egg hunters found the chrome://dino address, freeing the game from the error page.
  • Anniversary events later dressed the dino in a birthday hat — fuel for the remakes covered in our Doodle article.

The Legacy: a Genre

The dino spawned mirrors (elgooG's backwards version), extensions (browser store clones), mods, 3D remakes (try our Dinosaur Game 3D) and whole sites like this one. Not bad for an apology screen. Its design lessons — instant start, one input, endless difficulty — run through every game we build, from T-Rex Runner to Dino Run.

Frequently Asked Questions

When was the dinosaur game released?

It shipped in Chrome in September 2014, with a December 2014 rewrite that fixed performance on older Android phones.

Why is it called Project Bolan?

The internal codename honoured Marc Bolan, singer of the band T. Rex — a pun on the game's T-Rex hero.

Why did the designers choose a dinosaur?

As a joke: no internet sends you to the 'prehistoric age', so you're accompanied by a prehistoric creature. Planned flourishes like roaring were cut to keep it minimal.

How many people play the dinosaur game?

The commonly cited figure is around 270 million games per month, with the heaviest play in regions where connectivity is expensive or unreliable.

Is the dinosaur game open source?

The runner's code lives in the open Chromium project, which is why faithful clones, mods and remakes are so widespread.
